What is Northern lights?

Throughout history, people have always been amazed and fascinated by the green and red light dancing over the sky in the nights.
In Latin it is called Aurora Borealis.
We who live above the Arctic Circle see it once in a while. Even so we often stop and look up to enjoy the spectacular light show.

In all of our dog sledding tours with overnight there are big chances to see the northern lights.
However, there is no guarantee, because it can be cloudy and because there is not northern lights every night.
For those who do not want to go on a longer dog sled adventure we also have 3-hours northern light tours.

The rain is pouring down in Jokkmokk and we are longing for the white clear winter days.
The huskies has been in training already since the beginning of August and are just as happily excited and eager each new training run regardless of the weather.
We sit wet and muddy on the quads and dream away to the days back on the dog sled out on the white wide open spaces in the mountains.
So, between the training runs we dry up inside with a cup of tea in front of the computer and flip through our winter images.
Of course we like to share!

Hiking along the northern King’s Trail

This week I have guided a group hiking along the northern Kings Trail, Kungsleden.
Sometimes we are hired as guides by the Swedish Tourist Association for their groups.
We started in Abisko and walked south along the Kings Trail down to Nikkaluokta. Pretty nice weather, beautiful fall colors, a nice group of 10 participants and lots of mountains!

In the late 1800s came the first ideas about creating a hiking trail in the mountains of Swedish Lapland. This route should pass the most beautiful places and therefore become the “Kings of trails” – the Kings Trail (Kungsleden in Swedish)!

To hike this part of the King’s Trail in mid-September means no crowding. And that I once again got nice guest with me didn’t make things worse!

Jokkmokkguiderna is proud to be listed as one of Volvo Cross Country Travels Top 50 Scandinavian Adventures .

Last winter a film crew from Volvo was here filming me and 8 of our huskies .
Their plan was to film us dog sledding in Sarek National Park but they had very short time, just one day, so we had to shoot the film here in Jokkmokk.
Sarek National Park is true wilderness and is not easy accessible. It takes about one day to reach from where the road ends.
We make one dog sled tour every winter going straight through Sarek.
Explore Sarek National Park is our toughest tour and require that you have outdoor experience since before.
Even though the environment in the movie is not correct it is very nicely filmed and you get the feeling of dogsledding.

Flaming autumn in Swedish Lapland

Another great hiking week has passed. With Saltoluokta Mountain Station as my employer and starting point me and a group from Finland made a hiking tour south along the Kings trail.
The autumn colors are here and the mountains starts to blaze in orange, red and yellow. The mosquitoes are gone and the morning mists starts to come. The air is clear and fresh and full of oxygen. For each breath it feels like you get healed from inside.
The group came from Österbotten which is from the Swedish speaking part of Finland.
I’m so thankful for the insight I get in other peoples lives. This week it was Finnish people and other times it’s Americans, Egypt’s, Italians etc.
I got some prejudiced confirmed about the Swedish speaking Finnish people! They are hardworking, reliable and they have a honest and fine pride for their origin and their history in the Finnish winter war.
What I didn’t know was that they have a great sense of humor.
Now I know! And I thank our neighbors in the east for a nice couple of days.

Winter dreams in a roasting hot summer

A roasting hot summer in Jokkmokk with +27 C in the shadow.
The summer proceeds with some shorter canoe tours, kennel visits and with people renting canoes and kayaks from us. Today a solo travelling guy rented a canoe for a two weeks canoe adventure in lake Karats. Two weeks to enjoy the silence and peacefulness of the forests and mountains. We hope he gets a nice tour.
Stina spends most of her time building new dog houses for the huskies. The dogs get fully insulated two floor dog house castles! You can see some pictures on our Facebook site.
Me myself is dreaming about the winter. I have edited a film from the tour Crossing Lapland with dog sled from 2009. During the coming winter season we have two departures on this tour.

Hiking tour with students from Uppsala

Every year we arrange an annual short mountain hike for the students at Uppsala International Summer Session (UISS).
UISS offers summer courses for people from all over the world. During some intense weeks the students study the Swedish language.
The students also get the opportunity to participate in different outings, and the hiking tour in Lapland is one of them.
We started the tour with a boat ride over the river Kamajokk. On the other side we got welcomed by the mosquitoes and light shower of rain. The hike started with a long uphill and when we had reached the treeline and the bare mountain we set our camp.
The next day we took us up to Vallespiken where we had a clear view into Sarek National Park. The clear blue sky and the broiling sun made the short passage over a snowfield very appreciated.
The third and last day we walked down to Kvikkjokk again and took the bus to Jokkmokk and Skabram Camping where hot showers and a dinner with reindeer and potatoes awaited us.
A beautiful tour with positive and nice students as usual!

Single in Salto 2011

During the last couple of years me and Janne Axelsson from Inspirationsguiderna have been hired as guides for the arrangement called Single in Salto.
During the week we make different day tours with Saltoluokta Mountain Station as a base where we spend the nights and eat tasty three course dinners every evening. This year we were really lucky with the weather and didn’t have to use our rain clothes at all. We had 12 very nice participants in the group.
Many people falsely think that Single in Salto is a kind of dating week which is not true.
Of course people sometimes find love here, but I think it happens just as often on other kind of tours.
Single in Salto is a week for people who don’t have any to travel within their acquaintanceship with the same interests but still want to have company. It’s also perfect for you who like to do day tours in beautiful surroundings with the service and comfort of having a mountain station as a base.
If you are interested in participating next summer contact Saltoluokta Mountain Station.
I hope to get the honor to be guide on Single in Salto also next year.

Canoeing and kayaking in Swedish Lapland

To paddle along one of the many waterways in Swedish Lapland is maybe the best way to experience a summer in Lapland.
Silently drift in a canoe or kayak, get rid of the heavy backpacks, pack a bottle of wine and a delicious steak. Set your camp on a small cape where the wind blow away the mosquitoes and see how the midnight sun paint the landscape in warm shades.

Around Jokkmokk we have all kinds of paddle waters suitable for short day trips up to weeklong expeditions.
Take a look at the canoe routes we recommend.
The paddling route along the upper Small Lule river is suitable for you who like to go canoeing/kayaking on a longer tour.
The canoe route in the Pearl river nature reserve are for those who look for desolate wilderness without other people.
The lake Skabram very close to Jokkmokk is outstanding for shorter tours.

From us you can rent canoes, kayaks, tents and stoves and we help you with transports to and from the paddling routes.
Our Canoe Central is situated only 3 km outside Jokkmokk.
